Salisbury University is a public university in Salisbury, which is a city in the southeastern part of the US state of Maryland, serving as the county seat of Wicomico County. During the 2000 census estimate, Salisbury's population was approximated at a number of nearly 23 800 inhabitants, fact which makes it the largest city in Maryland's Eastern Shore region.
Salisbury University was established in 1925 and was originally called Maryland State Normal School. Its current name was adopted in 2001, after being previously known as Maryland State Teachers College and Salisbury State College. It currently offers its students 42 distinct undergraduate and 14 graduate degree programs, being consistently ranked in the top 10 percent of public and private institutions, nationwide.
Salisbury's athletic teams are known as the Sea Gulls and they compete in NCAA Division III. Their distinctive colors are maroon and gold and their mascot is Sammy the Sea Gull.
